What is Blackjack?

Blackjack is an American version of Twenty-One which is a popular game worldwide. In this game, cards are compared between the players and the dealer. Players don’t compete against each other, instead, they must try to beat the dealer.

Blackjack is played with one or more 52-deck cards. It is known as the most played casino banking game all over the world. The main goal of the game is to beat the dealer.

You can win by either reaching a card value of 21 on the first two dealt cards, having a higher card value than the dealer without going over 21 or if the dealer drew additional cards and went over 21.

History of Blackjack

Blackjack has a mysterious origin since there is no specific person or place to trace it back to. What we know for sure is that Blackjack is derived from the game, twenty-one. The game was present since the 17th century and was mentioned in a short story written by Miguel de Cervantes and referred to the goal of the game is to achieve 21 points without exceeding. The game was played with the Spanish cards deck.

Blackjack is also connected to France in the 17th century. The French cards were referred to as ‘Vingt-et-Un’ which means twenty-one in English. This may have been the precursor of Chemin de Fer. Blackjack was also popular at the French Royal Court during the rule of King Louis XV.

Meanwhile, the game of twenty-one spread like wildfire in the United States, and casinos began offering bonus payouts to motivate players. One bonus was a payout ratio of 10:1 if the player has ace of spades and a black Jack. This was referred to as ‘Blackjack’ which stuck. Now, ‘Blackjack’ is the name for a card game which refers to a hand of ace with a face card.

Rules of Blackjack

  • The Joker, Queen, King and 10 will all have card values of 10.
  • The player has an option to choose the value of Ace, either a 1 or 11.
  • All numbers from 2 to 9 are valued as the number on the face of the card.
  • After the dealer has dealt cards to all players, you can still ask for more cards until you go over 21 or have the best possible hand.
  • You ‘stay’ or ‘stand’ to inform the dealer that you no longer need more cards.

Strategies against the dealer:

  • Drawing a hand value that is higher than the value of the dealer’s hand.
  • If the dealer hand draws a card value more than 21.
  • If you draw a hand value of 21 on your first two cards, while the dealer does not.

2 ways you can lose to the dealer:

  • Your hand value is more than 21.
  • At the end of the round, the dealer’s hand has a greater card value than yours.

5 Ways You Can Play Your Hand:

a.) Stand
If your first two cards dealt are already enough, you may choose to stand. The dealer will move forward to the next player. You can hand signal to the dealer by waving your hand or by putting out an open palm over the felt.

b.) Hit
It is a way to request more cards from the dealer to improve the value of your hand. You can request for more cards until you choose to stand or ‘bust’ for going over 21. You are not limited to any number of cards (that is if you don’t go over 21). You may hand signal to the dealer by tapping the felt with your finger.

c.) Double Down
You can make use of this action if you have a hand total that is already enough. Then, you must double your initial bet and an additional card will be dealt to you. You can signal to the dealer by putting up the same amount of your initial wager to the left side of your previous bet and an additional card will be dealt to you.

d.) Split
If you’re dealt 2 cards with similar value, you have the choice to put out a second wager and the dealer will split the two cards so that each will become the first on two new hands. You are also allowed to do this even on face cards such as King, Jack or Queen. If you will signal the dealer, you have to put another wager that has the same value as your first. Then, give the dealer a peace sign to indicate you will split.

e.) Surrender
You can choose to give up your initial hand, in exchange for half of your initial bet. To signal the dealer, you must draw a line across the felt behind your bet. To make sure that the dealer understands your Act, say ‘surrender’ and make the hand signal.

How to Play Blackjack?

The most common game of blackjack is dealt from a 6-deck or 8-deck shoe. Shoe refers to a card-dispensing device used in a land-based casino. Finally, here are the steps you must follow in playing Blackjack:

Step 1: You need to buy chips before playing the game.

Step 2: At the beginning of the round, you must place a bet in the betting circle or square.

Step 3: The dealer will deal the cards to the players. Each player must receive two cards face up, in front of them. Meanwhile, the dealer will have a card face up and the other face down.

Step 4: The game will begin, starting at the person on the leftmost of the dealer. The player must play their hand by adding the card value together and get a total from 4 to 21. If you get a Blackjack, you win a 3:2 payoff.

Step 5: The dealer will play their hand.

Step 6: After that, payouts will be given to winners. One of 2 things can happen:

  • The dealer will bust and pay each hand equally.
  • The dealer will make a hand. If you are still playing, the battle will be on who has the higher hand. If the dealer has a higher hand, they will take your bet. If you have the higher hand, the dealer shall pay you 1x your wager. Then, if you and the dealer have the same total, you keep your money and won’t be paid.

Step 7: The dealer will sweep the cards which concludes the round. After that, another round will begin.
